According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, ten liters of water are used up for a DIN A4 sheet. The Kiel University of Applied Sciences has calculated that every German consumes on average 48,000 sheets of A4 paper per year. This paper mountain weighs an impressive 240 kilograms. If you multiply the two figures, that is 480,000 liters of water per inhabitant per year. And only for paper, not for the bathtub water and not for cooking, toilet flush etc.
Growing Paper: Paper Flowers
Based in Châteaufort (Yvelines – France), Global Print Solution has made a virtue out of necessity. The paper is thrown away? Then off to the garden! Simply cover with a bit of soil, water regularly and after a short time sprouts and thrives, for example, pretty wildflowers or tasty salad. Since 2008, Rémy Faisca, managing director of the printing company, has worked on his special paper. Compostable paper has been around for a while, but a paper that literally comes to life was a real innovation. His tenacity has paid off, the so-called “Growing Paper” (seed paper) was a blockbuster and now accounts for 80 percent of sales.
Customers are both companies and private individuals. Whoever chooses said seed paper instead of standard invitation cards will certainly remember his guests for a long time. For companies, the Growing Paper cards are a creative and sustainable alternative to traditional mailing campaigns. Incidentally, it does not always have to be postcards and greeting cards, business cards or even confetti are in the Growing Paper assortment. Bills would in principle also be a good idea, but unfortunately there is this legal retention period …
The paper consists of two thin layers, between which are numerous seeds. So that the planting result is later crowned with success, a water-soluble and biodegradable paper, with a grammage between 60g / m2 is used, which feels because of the incorporated seeds but more like an 80g / m² paper. Incidentally, the seeds are also easy to see from the outside, which is why the cards are visually similar to a rough-hued wallpaper. Anyone who is very familiar with gardening knows that a certain planting distance is needed. Therefore, there is space for a maximum of 200 seeds on one card. The customer can decide for himself which seed it is. For example, those who like to cook and eat choose carrot or lettuce seeds. Those who love flowers, on the other hand, choose poppy or forget-me-not seeds. Also seasonal items are in the portfolio: In the Christmas period, for example, paper with pine seeds can be selected.
